Winning Speech

What Makes a Winning Speech ?

Interesting speech by Dananjaya Hettiarachchi. He was able to connect with his audience by telling them about his personal life story and using the rose as an illustration. His speech was simple and superb, he was able to make people laugh and relax by mixing humor with it. He won the championship of public speaking that day and continues to inspire many people by his speech through his video. His speech was not too long or too short and he finished his speech right on time. He did not rush his speech but had a good momentum on when to slow down. His tone of voice was raised up at certain points and then drop back down which makes it interesting to listen. While listening to his speech through this video, not even once was I opted out to thinking something. Dananjaya was able to hold my attention with his words and his speech delivering techniques. You might have noticed that he walked and did not stay idle on the stage which was very good. His speech was also inspiring and we can see how the audience responded at the end. By watching this video, we can learn some good techniques about how to deliver a good speech, how to illustration points, and to learn what makes people laugh. End of the day, practice makes it to be perfect, I am sure that Dananjaya continues to practice on his speech delivering techniques, why? to polish even further even though he is a world champion at it.

4 simple ways to improve with your public speaking

1.Smile more often when you can

Smiling releases the tension in your face and puts the audience at ease while listening to you. You don't want look like someone that has a very serious face and then pretend he or she only cares about the presentation that they are making instead of the people that they are talking to. Smiling helps and improves your speech delivering, it makes you to be relaxed. You might ask me, how is it possible for me to smile when I am nervous or when my head is spinning while looking at the group of people that I am suppose to be talking to. Did you know that smiling actually helps you to deal with nervousness, I have learned this by experience. Whenever I am feeling nervous before going up on the stage or even while I am presenting, I genuinely start to smile and every time I did that I felt more comfortable and was more confident with speaking. But don't overdo your smilling! that can make your audience realise that there is something fundamentally wrong with your presentation or even with you lol.

2. Be animated

Don't be boring with your speech or presentation always have some animation with the way you deliver it. For an example you can increase your tone of voice on certain important points and lower your voice tone while expressing the rest. People have a very short attention span these days. The last thing you want is people nodding of to sleep and yawning while you are delivering the speech or presentation. These things will seriously effect you as the presenter, it is sending you the message that people are not interested and that you are boring. We want to change that by being animated. You can also choose to walk towards the audience to prove a point or use hand gestures more often. You can watch a child all day long and not get bored, they are unpredictable !

3. Interaction

Have an interaction with the audience that you are speaking to or making a presentation. Interaction makes the audience to be more in alert and they pay more attention. For an example you can ask them questions regarding the presentation and reward them with small gifts. Ask hard questions so that you can generate a buzz in the audience. But this is really depended on the group that you are speaking to. You can't be doing this at a funeral service, common sense is the main rule of thumb when it comes to interaction with your audience. Don't ask questions that you don't know the answer to, because if nobody in the audience knows then you are serious trouble.

4. Practice

You have to practice doing the presentation or the speech as many times as you can. While practising always visualise who your people are and act as if you are speaking to them live. Without practise you are sure to makes mistakes unless you are a pro. The pro's make mistake but you won't see it since it is polished.

Are you an Introvert?

Susain Cain shares some important points at Ted TALKS on the power of being an introvert. Watch this video to see why it matters to be confident with who you are. Too often introverts feel very shy when it comes to public speaking. They will almost pass the opportunity without even thinking about it since they don't like crowd or too much attention. Being a public speaker is about being confident with who you are rather then trying to be someone else. Today Susain Cain shares her story in front of thousands of people because she is confident with herself.  As a speaker you want to be genuine with the people that you are speaking with. Audience can sense when the speaker pretends to be someone else instead of being authentic with your own personality. I'm an introvert, but this did not stop me from public speaking.
